ARPA (Automatic Radar Plotting Aid)

This intensive three-day course provides specialized training in the use of ARPA. It is a requirement for any bridge watchkeeping officer navigating a vessel equipped with ARPA radar. ARPA is a SEN 1 & 2 refresher course for applicants who wish to renew their certificate after a five year absence from the marine industry.

Bridge Resource Management (BRM)

‘Human Error’ can be a major factor in maritime accidents. This five-day course is aimed at improving safety and efficiency on board as it deals with the development of human resources and managerial skills of Masters, Navigating Officers and Bridge Watch Keepers. The BRM course is highly interactive, involving a number of group discussions and case-studies, and role-play exercises using the Bridge simulator.

Bridge Watch Rating

This course is intended for mariners with a minimum of 6 months deck experience and will prepare them to challenge the TCMS Bridge Watchman exam. Delivery will be a combination of theory and practical skills, i.e., seaman’s obligations, safe working practices, review of general ship knowledge, gyro and magnetic compass, keeping a lookout, detached duties including communication systems and verbal communications, rope work and wire splicing.

Other Transport Canada requirements include: medical certificate, MED A1, B1, B2, or STCW Basic Safety, STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft, Marine Basic First Aid and an 8 hour steering testimonial.

Bridge Watch Rating (full course) *new*

This 15 week full-time entry-level program has been developed with those individuals who have limited marine industry experience in mind. The program is designed to standardize the proficiency of a new seafarer at a basic level of performance. The participant will learn facts, skills, and attitudes towards the safe and efficient working habits required for the specific duties and tasks on the job as a bridge watchman.

Topics include:
- Steering the ship and complying with helm orders.
- Keeping a proper look-out.
- Shipboard terms and definitions.
- Monitoring and controlling a safe watch.
- Operating emergency equipment and applying emergency procedures.
- Marine occupational health and safety.
- Restricted Operator’s Certificate – Maritime Commercial.

Participants are required to complete a period of 2 months sea service time which must be approved by Transport Canada.

Career Opportunitites
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be a Transport Canada Marine Safety certified Bridge Watchman who will become part of the bridge watch team in navigation at the support level. This Transport Canada Manrine Safety Bridge Watchman certificate opens a vast range of career opportunities within the tug boat industry, passenger ferries and Coast Guard. With the global marine traffic set to triple over the next 20 years and worldwide shortage of ship’s officers and seafarers, the demand for entry-level marine workers continues to grow. This course has been specifically designed to meet the training needs of the marine industry in Canada as well as Internationally.

The Transport Canada Bridge Watch Rating Certificate Examination can be written at either Georgian College – Great Lakes International Marine Training Centre, or at a delegated Transport Canada office.

Prerequisites:
A Seafarers Medical with an approved Transport Canada doctor prior to the program start date is required.
Please refer to Transport Canada’s website for a complete list of Marine Medical Examiners. This will ensure that participants are physically able to undertake employment in the marine industry. Proof of physical fitness must be provided in the form of a signed medical from a TCMS approved physician.

ECDIS Electronic Chart Display and Information System

An Electronic Chart Display and Information system (ECDIS) is a highly advanced and powerful navigational aid, specifically designed for enhancing safety at sea. Participants will be required to demonstrate proper use of the ECDIS equipment, including the use of navigational functions associated with route planning and monitoring; the ability to select, display and interpret relevant information and know what proper action to take in case of malfunction.

Simulated Electronic Navigation SEN 1 Part A

At course completion participants will possess a knowledge of the principles, the ability to use and the skill required for the correct operation of the following navigational equipment: radar, ARPA, radar plotting, satellite navigation (GPS/DGPS), Loran-C, gyrocompass,auto pilot, course recorder and echo sounder.

Simulated Electronic Navigation SEN 1 Part B

At the completion of this course the participant will possess a thorough knowledge of the application of the collision regulations and the principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch in a simulated environment. Electronic aids will be utilized to plot the ship’s position and progress, and in a one-on-one ship situation take necessary action to avoid collision without putting the vessel at risk.

Simulated Electronic Navigation 2 (SEN 2)

This course will enable the participant to make appropriate decisions in complex navigational situations, to effectively manage the bridge watchkeeping team and to comply with the standards regarding watchkeeping in a simulated environment. The participant will prepare and execute a voyage plan from berth to berth using the necessary instruments and publications while assuming the duties and responsibilities of the master aboard ships having specified maneuvering characteristics.

Simulated Electronic Navigation (Limited Radar) SEN 1L

SEN Limited is a 30-hour course intended for officers of commercial vessels over 60 GT and fishing masters. Attendees will gain knowledge of the principles, the ability to use and the skill required for the proper operation of typical navigation electronic equipment found on board a coastal vessel. Topics include plotting and charting exercises; basic knowledge of navigational instruments such as GPS, Echo Sounders, LORAN C and collision avoidance.

Pilotage- St Lawrence Seaway
This Pilotage course will provide the technical knowledge to complement the qualifications and experience of professional mariners in order to achieve competency to undertake Pilotage duties throughout the Great Lakes Pilotage Authority (GLPA) districts.

Deck Officers that have successfully completed this program will be able to demonstrate that they have the skills needed to pilot the various rivers and ports in the Great Lakes / St. Lawrence system.

Demonstrated pilotage skills will include:
- plan a passage in the district;
- conduct their ship safely and efficiently, avoiding obstacles to navigation;
- decide what action to take in bad weather and in emergency situations;
- perform docking and departure manoeuvres, canalling, anchoring, and piloting in ice.
