Master Limited Certificate
Every commercial vessel over 5 GT (including passenger vessels) must have someone onboard with a Master Limited Certificate.
The Master Limited Course is intended for mariners wishing to attain certification to operate a small commercial vessel up to 60 GT. Topics include; navigation safety, aids to navigation, meteorology, ship stability, shipmaster’s business, chart knowledge, coastal navigation and general seamanship.
This course includes classroom instruction as well as practical training and assessment utilizing Georgian College’s Simulation Centre. Practically all types of small commercial vessels are simulated with all of the systems you might have onboard your own vessel and more! Simulated exercises will include Rules of the Road and Navigation Systems, as well as Shiphandling and Maneuvering. Bring your sea legs as the sensation of motion is realistic and dramatic.
There are no prerequisites to take this Master Limited (under 60GT) course.
Listed below are the additional marine courses that you will be required to take before a Master Limited (under 60 GT) certificate can be issued by Transport Canada Marine Safety:
• TCMS Marine Medical (must be obtained from TCMS approved doctor)
• Marine Basic First Aid
• Marine Emergency Duties A1 (MED A1) for non-passenger vessels or A2 (MED A2) for passenger carrying vessels.
• ROC-M radio license or ROC-MC depending on area of operation
• Two (2) months sea service, performing deck related duties on a ship of not less than five (5) GT
After this course is completed, and all the requirements listed above are met, candidates will be required to contact TCMS and complete the written, oral and practical examinations with a TCMS examiner. Questions will be based on the area of operation, type of craft, number of passengers carried on board and types of equipment carried on board.
The Master Limited (under 60 GT) Certificate issued by TCMS is vessel specific and area specific.

The Master Limited 150 Domestic Certificate is a new certificate offered in accordance with the Canada Shipping Act 2001.
The holder of a Master 150 GT Domestic may act as:
1)Master on board a vessel of not more than 150 GT, engaged on a near coastal voyage, Class 2.
2)Master on board a vessel of not more than 500 GT engaged on sheltered waters voyage.
3)Master on board a vessel of not more than 150 GT engaged on limited voyage, contiguous waters, if endorsed as such.
Listed below are the Transport Canada Marine Safety (TCMS) requirements for the Master 150 GT Domestic Certificate:
• STCW Basic Safety
• STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft
• STCW Advanced Fire Fighting
• ROC-MC Radio License
• SEN Limited
• Marine Advanced First Aid
• TCMS Marine Medical (must be obtained from a TCMS doctor)
All of the courses listed above are offered by Georgian College.
Candidates will also be required to pass the following TCMS examinations:
• Chartwork & Pilotage Level 2
• Navigation Safety Level 1
• Meteorology Level 1
• Ship Construction and Stability Level 3
• General Ship Knowledge Level 3
These subjects are offered as Marine Tutorials by Georgian College. At the completion of each tutorial, candidates will be required to contact TCMS to write the final exam. Please check under the Marine Tutorial tab, for course details and course outlines.
Sea Service Required
• 24 months performing deck related duties

Fishing Master Fourth Class of a Fishing Vessel 15 To 100 Gross Tons
This course complies with the requirements of TP 2293 Chapter 24 of the Marine Certification Regulations. The Fishing Master IV certificate is an internationally recognized designation issued by Transport Canada Marine Safety (TCMS).The holder of a Fishing Master, Fourth Class (FMIV) certificate may act as a master on board a fishing vessel of not more than 100 gross tonnage engaged on a near coastal 1 (up to 200 miles offshore) or sheltered waters voyage and as an officer in charge of a watch of a fishing vessel of any tonnage engaged on a near coastal 1 or sheltered voyage.
There are no prerequisites to take the Fishing Master IV course.
The FM IV course is comprised of:
— 290 hours in-class instruction on chart work, meteorology, navigation safety, ship construction and stability, cargo handling, shipmaster’s business and general seamanship. This FM IV course will enable the candidates to pass the following TCMS examinations:
• Chartwork & Pilotage Level 1
• Navigation Safety Level 1
• Ship Construction & Stability Level 1
• Oral examination on General Seamanship
At course completion, candidates will be required to contact TCMS to write the final exam for each individual subject.
Listed below are the additional Transport Canada Marine Safety requirements for the Fishing Master IV certificate:
• TCMS Marine Medical (must be obtained from a TCMS approved doctor)
• Marine Advanced First Aid
• SEN Limited
• Marine Emergency Duties A1 (MED A1)
• ROC-MC radio license
• Twelve (12) months sea service performing deck duties on one or more fishing vessels that are 6 m in length.

Course Length: 9 weeks (290 hours) Monday to Friday only and it includes the SEN Ltd course.
Course Fee: $6,900.00 (with a minimum of 4 students. If more than 4 students, course fee will be reduced)

- The FM IV course is combined with the Master Limited course for the first five weeks.
- Georgian College will deliver the FM IV course in your local community, with a minimum of 8 confirmed participants. Please note that the SEN Limited Course will not be included. Please contact 1-866-468-3225 to discuss.

For courses over $600.00, you can register now and pay only $150.00 per course to hold your seat. The balance is due on the first day of your course.
If you choose this fee deferral option, $100.00 goes towards your tuition and $50.00 is an admin fee, so it will cost you an extra $50.00 per course, but it does allow you to save your seat now and pay later.
