Participants are required to complete a period of 3 months sea service time which must be approved by Transport Canada.
Career Opportunities
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be a Transport Canada Marine Safety Certified Engine Room Rating who will become part of the engine-room team in engineering at the support level. This Transport Canada Marine Safety Engine Room Rating Certificate opens a vast range of career opportunities as a marine engineer, industrial mechanic or in various positions within the Federal Public Service. The Engine Room Rating works on all types of ships from icebreakers to sounding ships and buoy tenders. With the global marine traffic set to triple over the next 20 years and worldwide shortage of ship’s officers and seafarers, the demand for entry-level marine workers continues to grow. This course has been specifically designed to meet the training needs of the marine industry in Canada as well as internationally.
Accreditations: Graduates will obtain the following certificates:
- Georgian College Confined Space Entry
- Georgian College Marine Occupational Safety and Health
- Georgian College Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS)
- Transport Canada Marine Safety Engine Room Rating Certificate
- Transport Canada Marine Safety STCW Basic Safety
- Transport Canada Marine Safety Proficiency in Survival Craft
The Transport Canada Engine Room Rating Certificate Examination can be written at either Georgian College –Great Lakes International Marine Training Centre, or at a delegated Transport Canada office.
Prerequisites:
A Seafarers Medical with an approved Transport Canada doctor prior to the program start date is required. This will ensure that participants are physically able to undertake employment in the marine industry.
Proof of physical fitness must be provided in the form of a signed medical from a TCMS approved physician.
Please refer to Transport Canada’s website for a complete list of Marine Medical Examiners.

Practical Skills for Marine Engineers
At present, there are two routes for seafarers to acquire their first certificate of competency as a Fourth-class Engineer.
Option one is to join an institute offering an approved three year Cadet Training program. Once the diploma is completed successfully, Marine Safety will credit the qualifying time acquired at the institute for attending the course, plus six months qualifying time for completing the mandatory Training Record book and Practical Skills Training, which are embedded in the course curriculum.
The second option or Alternate Path is to acquire 36 months total qualifying time by sailing as an ERR or by other Transport Canada approved specified means, and by completing the mandatory Training Record book and Practical Skills Course. Time spent on the Practical Skills course may be used toward the 36 months total time. The usual credit by Transport Canada for this course is 6 months.
Candidates are required to contact a Transport Canada engineer examiner to confirm their eligibility prior to registering.
Once agreed with the examiner, the candidate must complete the following courses:
